CMIP5 Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index data

Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI):

  • SPEI results should be interpreted as a relative measure of surface water surplus or deficit with respect to hydroclimate conditions of the reference period, 1950–2005.
  • Users can choose between SPEI results fitted with either generalized logistic or Pearson Type 3 distributions. In general, we recommend using Pearson Type 3 (PE3) distribution for SPEI studies in Canada.
  • The data are available at a 1x1 degree grid resolution for the landmass of Canada at 1, 3 and 12 month time scales. SPEI-24 is also available for the SPEI dataset fitted with Pearson Type 3.
  • Please see the technical notes for more information on the development and use of the SPEI dataset.
